L’individualisme chez Eileen Chang vu d’Un amour dans une ville tombée

Abstract


The individualism emphasizes personal liberty, dignity and interests. The May Fourth Movement awakes the individual consciousness in the thoughts of modern Chinese intellectuals. As a spiritual heritor of this movement, Eileen Chang insists always on her personal judgment instead of following the grandiose ideological discourses. She is interested in the ordinary and concrete men and women who struggle for their personal survival and happiness in the History’s disaster whirlpool. Her heroes and heroines losing their self are silent protests to all that prevents the individual development. Apparently, Love in a fallen city is a love story with happy end. In fact, it’s an elegy about the lost of self-awareness.
